WINTHROP, Mass. —

Three people are dead, including the suspect, after multiple shootings broke out in Winthrop — including a police shooting — after a stolen truck crashed into and leveled a house, according to authorities.

Massachusetts State Police investigators said a man stole a truck owned by a plumbing and drain company and then crashed into a building.

Winthrop police Chief Terence Delehanty said his department received a call about a motor vehicle crash into a home at the intersection of Shirley and Cross streets. He confirmed that the vehicle involved in the crash is reported stolen and that no one was inside the house at the time of the crash.

After the crash, the man exited the vehicle and proceeded to flee on foot. At some point shortly thereafter, the suspect — who was armed — is believed to have shot a woman and a man, who both died of their injuries.

Delehanty says one victim was found by Winthrop police on Shirley Street, about a half-block away from the scene of the crash. The second victim was engaged by the suspect in an alleyway between two houses that was further down the street, according to the police chief.

“I saw the kid climbing out of the truck. He had no shoes on. He was a little disoriented, and then he walked down towards the laundromat,” said witness Bob Harrington. “Then there was another blue car there and someone was saying: ‘Stop! Stop!’ I was looking at this from my window and then I heard (gunfire), so then I ran down to the street and ran down toward the scene and saw a girl in the middle of the street. … It was a shootout.”

Winthrop police then engaged the suspect, who Delehanty said was armed with two weapons, and shot him at the intersection of Shirley Street and Veterans Road. The suspect died of the injuries he suffered in the police shooting.

“At this time, I want to remind community members that everyone is safe. There are no other suspects we are looking for and the scene is under control,” Delehanty said.

MSP Superintendent Col. Christopher Mason says authorities know the identities of the victims, but they are still in the process of notifying their families. The suspect’s identity is also known to police but he has not been publicly identified.

Multiple sources tell 5 Investigates that the male victim is a retired Massachusetts State Police trooper. Sources also tell 5 Investigates that the victims and the suspect did not know each other.

A truck belonging to Rapid Flow Inc. crashed into a building in Winthrop, Massachusetts and leveled it on June 26, 2021. Police say the crash is connected to multiple shootings that happened the same day.

Video from Sky5 shows the stolen truck involved in the crash belongs to Rapid Flow Inc., a sewer and drain cleaning company in Revere.

Delehanty says another vehicle was involved in the crash with the stolen truck. The two occupants of that vehicle were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Sky5 spotted that vehicle, which sustained severe front-end damage from the crash.

State police say they are investigating whether the male victim may have been trying to engage the suspect to end the threat. Authorities said the female victim was a bystander.

One police officer was taken to an area hospital to be evaluated, but Delehanty says the officer was not seriously injured.

The Winthrop Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police are investigating the shooting with the assistance of Boston and Revere police.
