Orleans Cape Cod (FreeCapeCodNews) – Eversource using a helicopter to instal OPGW communication wiring along the top of utility transmission structures in Orleans, Cape Cod. The hours of operation for this work are: 7:00am – 5:00pm Monday through Saturday.

This dual-functioning cable makes the electric transmission system more resilient in adverse weather while also providing a vital communications link between its equipment (for example communication between substations). The optical ground wire, or OPGW, is placed at the topmost position on the transmission line where it protects important equipment from lightning with the added benefit of containing optical fibers to transmit data.
OPGW also allows Eversource the ability to reduce the duration of power outages in the event they happen.
Using the helicopter is a time and cost-effective bringing crews and tools to the transmission structures, some located in rough terrain, with the least amount of environmental impact.
