Detectives were led to an address in Clifton Heights and determined a homicide happened at the location, Louisville Metro Police Department spokesman Dwight Mitchell said.

A young man had arrived in Markham, Illinois, Sunday to visit family after traveling from Louisville with multiple suitcases, Markham police spokesman Mike Taylor said.

Family members thought the man “seemed to be kind of preoccupied with these cases,” Taylor said, and he asked his relatives about buying clothes.

His relatives wondered why he needed more clothes when he had multiple bags of luggage, Taylor said.

When the suspect finally left to go to the library, family members went to the bags and noticed a strange odor, Taylor said. They unzipped the bags, and inside “to their surprise were human remains.”

The family immediately notified Markham police, and officers arrested the suspect.

The remains are of one female body, Taylor said.

More information, including charges against the suspect, will be released soon, police say.

This is Louisville’s 117th homicide — tying the 2016 record — with more than three months left in the year.
