PENSACOLA, Fla. – Zeta set yet another hurricane season record when it made landfall along the Gulf Coast Wednesday.

When Zeta arrived as a Category 2 hurricane on the southeast Louisiana coast Wednesday afternoon, it became the 11th named storm this season to strike the U.S., according to Philip Klotzbach, meteorologist at Colorado State University specializing in Atlantic basin seasonal hurricane forecasts.

The prior record for continental U.S. named storm landfalls in a single season was nine set in 1916, Klotzbach said.

Only two other Atlantic hurricane seasons on record (since 1851) have had more than 11 Atlantic hurricanes by Oct. 26: 1950 and 2005.

Zeta made landfall as a Category 2 storm, with wind speeds just a few miles an hour shy of Category 3 level. Zeta is now the sixth hurricane to make landfall in the continental U.S. this year, tying 1886 and 1985 for most continental U.S. landfalling hurricanes in a single Atlantic season on record, Klotzbach said.

Zeta made landfall Wednesday afternoon near Cocoderie, Louisiana, with winds estimated at 110 mph, marking the eighth storm this season to have come ashore along the Gulf Coast.

With Wednesday’s storm, Louisiana broke its 2002 record with the most named storm landfalls in a current season – Cristobal, Marco, Laura, Sally, Delta, and Zeta.

Louisiana has been hit by two tropical storms and now three hurricanes. New Orleans has been in the warning area for potential tropical cyclones seven times this year, with each one veering to the east or west.
